Neochen jubata
Orinoco goose / Orinocogås

This was one of the sights on the Madre de Dios that I had hoped for: A pair of Orinoco geese. It was especially happy as these geese now are considered "near threatened". They have diminished in numbers, possibly with up to 75%. Nowadays you almost only find them in procted areas in the western Amazon area. It is a medium-sized goose (55 cms); both sexes are similar, the male is somewhat bigger. It is terrestrial and takes to flying or swimming only if is forced to. They nest in hollow trees and, if there are no other alternatives, on the ground.
