In Sweden (and the rest of the Old World) we have just one wren, the tiny Eurasian wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) - in the Americas there are almost ninety species. This one, the Fasciated wren, is almost twice the size of a Eurasian wren, 19 cm, and found only in the dry areas of coastal Ecuador and northwestern Peru. Like most wrens, the tail is often held erect and it feeds mainly on insects.
I Sverige (och i resten av Gamla Världen) har vi bara en enda gärdsmygsart (Troglodytes troglodytes). I Nord- och Sydamerika finns det nästan nittio arter! Den här, bandad gärdsmyg, är nästan dubbelt så stor som vår gärdsmyg, nämligen 19 cm lång, och förekommer bara i de torra områdena längs Ecuadors kust och i nordvästra Peru. Som de flesta gärdsmygar håller den ofta stjärten rakt upp och är som de övriga främst insektsätare.
