Vanellus spinosus
Spur-winged lapwing / Sporrvipa

Down by the shore of the Ewaso Ngiro River, we spotted this Spur-winged lapwing, obviously waiting for something. This lapwing is widespread in a belt across Africa, from Senegal to Somalia, as well as along the Nile and in some patchy areas of the Middle East. Its southernmost area is actually the border regions between Kenya and Tanzania. What gives the species its name, the wing spurs, cannot be seen in the picture. They are actually covered by the black fluffy feathers. These spurs are used e.g. when the lapwing defends its chicks against other animals or birds.
