Karmosinryggig hackspett

Woodpeckers are most commonly heard before you see them; that is what happened with this Crimson-mantled woodpecker. We heard it pecking after insects in a tree not far from my cabin. When we got a look at it, we had to follow it for some time in the crown of the tree, before it suddenly stopped pecking and looked up. This is a male because it has red patches on both sides of its chin, (unlike the female who has black patches there). The species is relatively large, 22-28 cm, and, as shown in the picture, is characterized by strong colors and elaborated patterns. It lives in the cloud rainforest and subsists on beetle larvae, ants, spiders, millipedes, and some fruits.

Hackspettar hör man oftast innan man ser dem.
