This is most certainly the only bird in the world that has a bill that is as long as the rest of the body. The Sword-billed hummingbird has a bill that can be up to 11 cm long while the body is usually is 10.5 to 12 cm long. The bill is obviously adapted to plants with trumpet-shaped flowers, where the nectar is found at the bottom of the trumpet, where other hummingbirds or flower-piercers cannot reach it. Because the bill is so heavy in comparison to the rest of the body, when this bird is going to rest, it holds the bill almost vertically to relieve the neck muscles. In the cloud rainforest it is found in the middle and upper strata of the vegetation.
Detta är förmodligen den enda fågeln i världen som har en näbb som är lika lång som resten av kroppen... Svärdnäbben (som snarare kanske skulle ha kallats 'spjutnäbben') har en näbb som kan vara upp till 11 cm lång medan kroppen i övrigt vanligtvis är 10,5 till 12 cm lång. Näbben är givetvis anpassad för växter med trumpetformade blommor där nektarn återfinns längst ner i blomman, dit andra kolibris eller blomstickare inte når. Eftersom näbben är så tung i förhållande till resten av kroppen, så när den skall vila, håller svärdnäbben den nästan helt rakt uppåt för att avlasta nackmusklerna. I molnregnskogen håller den till i mellan- och övre strata av vegetationen.
