The Water rail has some characteristics, one is that it has a longer and more reddish beak than almost any other crake. The dark part around the eye is similar, however, for example, to that of the Spotted crake, and the bluish chest is shared with several others representatives of the genus Rallidae.
Vattenrallen har några karaktäristika, ett är att den har en längre och rödare näbb än nästan alla andra sumphöns. Det mörka kring ögat liknar dock t.ex. småfläckig sumphöna, och det blåaktiga bröstet delar den med flera i släktet rallidae (sumphöns).
