Fregata minor ridgwayi
Great frigatebird / Större fregattfågel

11    2016-11-06    Galapagos, Ecuador

On November 6, 2016, we landed in the Galapagos after four decades... One of the first birds we saw was a female Great frigatebird. The nomenclature is confusing because the Latin name of the species is 'minor' ('small') and the closely related species 'Magnificent frigatebird' is actually bigger... In flight it is almost impossible to distinguish between the males of these two species. Females on the other hand can easily be distinguished by color of their throats. Females of Great frigatebird has a white throat, while females of the Magnificent frigatebird has a dark bib. (Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EF 70-300/4-5.6L IS USM).
